Children's Summer Teacher Program was created in 2008 to serve a niche population of educators who are looking for a way to volunteer their time during their summer break. The purpose of the program is to meet the needs of the hospital while providing a meaningful opportunity for our volunteer teachers to interact with our patients and staff.
We recognize that many teachers have an interest in volunteering their time during the summer months. To meet this need, Volunteer Services has a special program during which each applicant commits to eight hours of volunteering each week for five consecutive weeks. At the end of the program, teachers will be offered the opportunity to continue volunteering a few hours a week on a year-round basis during evenings or on weekends.
We are offering two Teacher Sessions this summer. The dates correspond with our student summer sessions, but the Teacher Program has different parameters. Each teacher will commit to volunteering a minimum of eight hours a week for five consecutive weeks. There are two five week sessions to choose from: Session A will be from June 7 to July 9 while Session B will be from July 12 to August 13. There are several opportunities to attend the trainings that must be completed prior to volunteering; these options are outlined on the cover letter which is a part of the application.

Nancy Johnson, a Children's volunteer, encourages creativity as she leads an arts and crafts session with Billy Fielder, 5, and Madalyn White, 8, in the C10 playroom. In 2007, volunteers contributed more than 150,000 hours to make life better for children.
