The Family Resource Libraries serve as a demonstration site for the Talking Book Program, a free service from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. The Talking Book Program offers "free library services to Texans of all ages who are unable to read standard print material due to visual, physical, or reading disabilities-whether permanent or temporary." The libraries provide demonstrations of the equipment and resources available from this program. For more information or a demonstration, contact librarian Janet Frey by calling 214-456-7735.
Desktop stations, located in the libraries, provide access to subscription health databases, Internet searches, and Microsoft tools. Many sites are bookmarked to help patrons get started. Laptops with wireless capabilities also can access the Internet in the libraries.
In the libraries, more than 2,000 books are available for checkout by patients and their families. Topics include consumer health, parenting, and family issues. Books for children are available for every age and reading level. Our magazine collection covers a broad range of interests, including general interest, consumer health and children's titles. Free brochures and pamphlets are available on many types of illnesses, treatment options, community resources and wellness information. Some are available in Spanish.
Library staff and trained volunteers are available to assist families in searching databases, using the Internet, finding books and periodicals, and in connecting with resources within the hospital as well as the community. Staff is available to help in person, by phone 214-456-7735 or email.
The Krissi Holman Family Resource Library is dedicated to further educate and meet the needs of family and staff. As a source of information for parents and family members, the resource library provides scientific information to further the knowledge of family members on medical and health-related issues. A collection of books, periodicals, pamphlets, videos and Internet access are available to gather information on various topics. The library also maintains a collection of children's books that are available for check out to patients.
Children enjoy listening to storytellers both in the library and in various other hospital locations. Contact the resource library for dates and times.
