Cutting-edge technology means less cutting at Children’s

At Children’s, minimally invasive surgeries have replaced many surgeries that used to be performed open, offering patients less pain, smaller scars and faster recovery times than ever before.

Thanks to Dr. Patricio Gargollo and the Da Vinci surgical robot, urology patients at Children’s have more minimally invasive options. Dr. Gargollo is one of only a handful of pediatric urologists with specialized training in advanced laparoscopy and robotic surgery, from Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School — where robotic surgery and laparoscopy for pediatric urology patients was pioneered.

Infection reduction initiative shows promise

Children’s Medical Center is part of a nationwide initiative to reduce the number of blood-stream infections caused by catheters used to deliver medications to children with cancer and blood disorders. The initiative, led by the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), was started after the success of a similar program to reduce blood-stream infections in pediatric intensive care units. The pediatric ICU initiative is credited with saving more than 97 lives, preventing 807 infections and saving $28 million for the institutions participating nationwide since October 2006.
