Head Off Holiday Havoc

Does the approach of the holidays make you want to put your kids down for a long winter’s nap? Consider yourself normal. Experts say the period from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day isn’t always “the most wonderful time of the year” for parents or children.

The hectic pace can frazzle kids, whether they’re celebrating a traditional holiday or just trying to survive the excitement of others who are. Bombarded by commercials, they can fixate on gifts and miss the joy of the season. “Holidays are typically a happy time spent with family and friends. But when holiday stress invades, parents are sometimes the unsuspecting victims,” says Ellen Hollon, director of child life at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

To Fill Your Home with Good Cheer:
Decide how much activity and expense your family can afford. Then stay within those limits: Stress accumulates as demands on time and energy increase.
Bullet Set realistic expectations. Your preschooler doesn’t have to attend all your teen’s concerts, and your teen need not attend every sibling’s choir program.
Bullet Don’t shop till you drop with children. “Young children have a short attention span and get tired easier than adults,” says Hollon.
Bullet Redirect bad behavior. Tell kids your expectations and the consequences of misbehavior — then follow through when needed. Set a limit appropriate to the child’s age.
Bullet Praise good behavior. Be specific: “I like it when you stay by my side while we’re waiting in line.”
Bullet Maintain the child’s normal routines as much as possible.
Bullet Allow time for relaxation. Urge kids to play, read or just talk.
Bullet Watch what kids eat. Limit consumption of caffeine, sugar and fat-laden foods.
Bullet Be sensitive to losses. Holidays may serve as reminders of loved ones absent due to death or divorce. Acknowledge the feelings of the children and allow for different ways to express sadness or feelings in general.
Bullet Be good to yourself. Take a walk, call a friend, read and get a full night’s sleep.
