According to Texas state law, students with asthma are entitled to possess self-administered prescription asthma medication on school property or at a school-related activity or event if:
- The medication is prescribed for the student, and the student’s name and information are clearly printed on the prescription label.
- Self-administration is done “in compliance with the prescription or written instructions from the student’s physician or other licensed healthcare provider.”
- The student’s parent provides a written and signed authorization to the school. The parent must provide a written and signed statement from the student’s physician or other licensed healthcare provider that states:
- The student has asthma and can administer her medication properly.
- The name and purpose of the medication.
- The prescribed dosage.
- The times or circumstances when the medicine may be administered.
- The period of time for which the medication is prescribed.
