Safe Steps Photo of father and sonWith many children walking or riding bicycles or scooters to school, parents should review pedestrian safety tips with their children:
  • Cross at intersections and crosswalks rather than at the middle of the street. Motorists are more likely to slow their vehicles at these locations, which often have stop or yield signs.
  • Walk, don’t run or dart, into the street.
  • Don’t run or walk between parked cars.
  • Stop at the edge of parked cars, the curb or other vehicles.
  • Look left, right, then left again before crossing. Continue watching both directions until you reach the other side.
  • Look for signs that a car is about to move (rear lights, exhaust smoke, sound of motor, wheels turning).
  • Walk alertly.
  • Walk or ride with a sibling or friend.
  • Always wear a protective helmet when in-line skating or riding a bike or scooter.
  • Ride on bike paths or sidewalks whenever possible.
  • Remember: Motorists often do not see a child.
